To RAID-0 or not to RAID-0
Why I don’t RAID anymore? It’s simpler, cheaper, quieter, energy efficient and the performance is quite the same. This was a quick decision a few months ago and I’m happy with it. It started with a computer for my friend for which I’ve ordered a largest for the money Seagate HDD (cause me and my friends like the brand) – a 500GB ST3500418AS. When it arrived I was shocked how small it was (low profile) and then I was shocked how fast it was.
Few benchmarks later I wasn’t stripping anymore and awaiting for my new drive.
How stable is 7?
Well it looks like 7 is the most stable OS I’ve ever had and I’ve used all of Windows since DOS. Currently my computer is running for 38 days without any restarts. It goes to sleep most nights, from time to time it hibernates if I need to shut down the power. This is very cool and convenient as I don’t need to close my apps anymore, they’re always there and I would panic if suddenly I’d have to close everything. Read the rest of this entry »
Logitech V550 Nano
RIP my dear friend. Finally after – I have no idea how many (at least 5) – years and thousands of kilometers my Logitech MouseMan Pilot has retired. Not quite dead yet but definitively over the edge. I’ve soldered a new diode not that long ago but the mouse freaks out again and the optics are worn out. It’s time for a change. The choice was quite obvious: Logitech, wireless, slick and simple. Custom ROM for X500+
I’ve been using custom ROM for my WM phone for more than half a year. It was the only reasonable ROM by KVA with WM6.1. It was exceptionally good also but KVA stopped updating it long time ago. Lorbas took over and produced a lot of versions. Earlier ones were not that far from KVA’s, we (community) were trying to fix many small issues and bugs but the latest 2.4 is a different story. It’s complete, fast and reliable. Read the rest of this entry »
Restore/fix dial skin in WM6
Yesterday I’ve downloaded some dial skins for my WM6 phone and one of them turned out to be QVGA. It was a mess and I couldn’t uninstall it or overwrite with another one, probably because the file was locked in use. Before I gave up and reinstalled my OS I’ve searched through the registry. Looking for the name of the skin turned out results pointing at phcan(name).dll files.
LaCie iamaKey 8GB
Till now I was using Kingston’s microSD card reader but it suddenly ended it’s life. Sad… I was forced to buy a new pen drive. The timing was perfect as LaCies newest product hit the stores. Yes, it really looks like the key and when I show my keyring, nobody noticed it yet and only asked about my car key :p Read the rest of this entry »
Back in business
Well, long time no see. Please forgive me but I’ve been busy. Now I’m back on track and promise to update the blog as often as possible. I’m also pleased to see that quite a lot of people visit my humble site, so I assume that knowledge gathered here is still useful. Let’s go on than with the news: Read the rest of this entry »
Skype Beta – The end of Skype?
There has just been released a new beta of Skype 4.0 Beta 3 and Skype for Windows Mobile 2.5 Beta.
Skype Mobile – It is supposed to work better but looks exactly the same as the old one, still you can’t use voice through EDGE conveniently and sound comes from the rear speaker instead of the ear piece of my Eten. Oh wait, they’ve changed status icons so you can’t tell anymore if the user is on or offline. You can try and install it (remove previous one first), no harm and maybe after throughout tests it will turn out better. Read the rest of this entry »
My old-NEW Firefox
There is a ton of posts about dressing up Firefox with Chromifox – a skin that looks nearly like Google Chrome and I must admit – it’s very practical too. The thing is that trying to make FF more like Chrome I’ve discovered add-ons which literally changed my life. I’ve promised to write about this and now I’ve tested enough to know what is a total FF must have! It’s a pity that you can’t exactly make FF to split each tab into separate process but Chrome sets a good direction and probably soon sandboxing (separating java, flash, tabs etc) will become a standard.
RAID 0 – cluster vs stripe size
Tired of the heavy NOISE produced by my WD Raptors RAID 0 setup, I’ve decided it was time to move on. Another thing was my little discovery of Seagate’s new enterprise series HDDs – ES.2 with 32MB buffer. I was setting up two powerful gaming rigs for my friends and accidentally found those drives and was thrilled later to test they were actually faster than my Raptors! This was all I needed to make a switch and I’ve bought two 250GB Barracudas for the price of two 74GB Raptors… (well, I’ve paid a fortune for them two years ago but this was my second no-cost upgrade, first was 6600GT AGP for 6800GT PCI-E). Great deal!
