Google Chrome

Recently I’m developing a web project (XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL) and in order to provide cross browser compatibility I was forced to install all the popular browsers including Opera, Safari and the coolest ever IE6 on XP virtual machine (1.3 GB!!!). Nothing changed and Firefox was still the best. Today I’ve just found out about Google’s project: Chrome.

I’ve decided to give it a try and you know what? I like it a lot, I didn’t uninstall it after 5 minutes and I’m writing this post using Chrome! What I like most is the minimalistic transparent design, ultra fast work and the concept of isolating processes per tab/application. The address bar with search while typing function also works well and looks really useful. Another cool feature is an activity indicator which shows when the page is sending data and when it’s downloading. This is still a beta so the final product should be exceptionally good. What I miss is a dictionary and some addons from Firefox but maybe they will come later.

There is a comic book (which is btw very good in terms of communication and design) describing the whole idea and what’s behind the scenes. It’s worth watching, it will give you nice insight about using (any) browser, how it works and what has to be taken into consideration. There is also a Google Doctype project concerning web pages development, standards, security etc. If your a developer it’s a must see!

Good job Google!
