To RAID-0 or not to RAID-0

leave a comment »

Why I don’t RAID anymore?  It’s simpler, cheaper, quieter, energy efficient and the performance is quite the same. This was a quick decision a few months ago and I’m happy with it. It started with a computer for my friend for which I’ve ordered a largest for the money Seagate HDD (cause me and my friends like the brand) – a 500GB ST3500418AS. When it arrived I was shocked how small it was (low profile) and then I was shocked how fast it was.

Few benchmarks later I wasn’t stripping anymore and awaiting for my new drive.

How stable is 7?

leave a comment »

Well it looks like 7 is the most stable OS I’ve ever had and I’ve used all of Windows since DOS. Currently my computer is running for 38 days without any restarts. It goes to sleep most nights, from time to time it hibernates if I need to shut down the power. This is very cool and convenient as I don’t need to close my apps anymore, they’re always there and I would panic if suddenly I’d have to close everything. Read the rest of this entry »

Logitech V550 Nano

with one comment

RIP my dear friend. Finally after – I have no idea how many (at least 5) – years and thousands of kilometers my Logitech MouseMan Pilot has retired. Not quite dead yet but definitively over the edge. I’ve soldered a new diode not that long ago but the mouse freaks out again and the optics are worn out. It’s time for a change. The choice was quite obvious: Logitech, wireless, slick and simple. LaCie iamaKey 8GB

leave a comment »

Till now I was using Kingston’s microSD card reader but it suddenly ended it’s life. Sad… I was forced to buy a new pen drive. The timing was perfect as LaCies newest product hit the stores. Yes, it really looks like the key and when I show my keyring, nobody noticed it yet and only asked about my car key :p Read the rest of this entry »

Skype Beta – The end of Skype?

with 2 comments

There has just been released a new beta of Skype 4.0 Beta 3 and Skype for Windows Mobile 2.5 Beta.

Skype Mobile – It  is supposed to work better but looks exactly the same as the old one, still you can’t use voice through EDGE conveniently and sound comes from the rear speaker instead of the ear piece of my Eten. Oh wait, they’ve changed status icons so you can’t tell anymore if the user is on or offline. You can try and install it (remove previous one first), no harm and maybe after throughout tests it will turn out better. Read the rest of this entry »

My old-NEW Firefox

leave a comment »

There is a ton of posts about dressing up Firefox with Chromifox – a skin that looks nearly like Google Chrome and I must admit – it’s very practical too. The thing is that trying to make FF more like Chrome I’ve discovered add-ons which literally changed my life. I’ve promised to write about this and now I’ve tested enough to know what is a total FF must have! It’s a pity that you can’t exactly make FF to split each tab into separate process but Chrome sets a good direction and probably soon sandboxing (separating java, flash, tabs etc) will become a standard.
